Nov AASL-ISTE SIGMS Learning Community Mtg

7 December 2008

On November 18, 2008, the AASL-ISTE SIGMS Learning Community meeting was led by guest facilitator Rhonda Trueman (avatar Abbey Zennith).  Rhonda Trueman is Head of Reference at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte, North Carolina.  She is the co-author of the recently released book “Virtual Worlds, Real Libraries: Librarians and Educators in Second Life and Other Multi-User Virtual Environments”.  Rhonda is also the Director of Library Resources & Services for the Alliance Virtual Library in Second Life.

Rhonda opened by briefing our group about the state of libraries in Second Life.  We learned that there is a robust and growing community of libraries that are virtual extensions of real libraries as well as special libraries that exist only in Second Life.  We talked about how reference services, a shared catalog of materials, and virtual collection development are all maturing within the library community.  Then, the group discussed what roles the school librarian can play in the future of libraries in Second Life.  We highlighted some issues and also talked about positive applications that can promote collaboration, networking, professional developments, and identification of educational resources.  Flicker pictures
