Virtual Librarian Learning Community Mtg - 11-19-07
22 November 2007On Monday, November 19th, Chicago Public School Department of Libraries held its monthly Virtual Librarian Learning Community meeting in Second Life. The meeting also included attendees from the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), the ISTE Media Specialists SIG (SIGMS), and the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA). In this month’s meeting, we discussed the new AASL “Standards for the 21st Century Learner” standard #1 - “Learners use skills, resources, and tools to inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge.” In a meeting attended by about 20 persons, we first commented on the overarching standard. This was followed by a closer examination of sub-components of the standard in the areas of 1.1 Skills, 1.2 Dispositions in Action, 1.3 Responsibilities, and 1.4 Self-Assessment Strategies. We discussed obstacles and solutions related to implementing these sub-components with students. In addition to the pedogogical discussion, various attendees were able to meet and network with each other in this virtual environment, fueling the potential for future collaboration.
