ISTE Media Specialists Special Interest Group (SIGMS) Program
19 September 2007On September 18th, the ISTE Media Specials Special Interest Group (SIGMS), with the Chicago Public Schools Department of Libraries & Information Services, hosted a program entitled “In Command! Teaching Kids and Teens to Build and Manage Their Own Information Spaces And…Learn to Manage Themselves in Those Spaces”. The program was co-presented by David Loertscher, a nationally recognized expert in school librarianship from San Jose State University’s School of Library & Information Science, and graduate assistant Robin T. Williams. They discussed opportunities and responsibilities related to guiding students in the use of information work spaces that support a world class education. In addition, they discussed a project called “Knowville” a world-wide initiatve to challenge children and teens, through various organizations, to read a billion books, write a billion books, and do a billion projects. This event, attended by approximately 40 persons, successfully presented information about free, customizable online collaborative workspaces for students and teachers that are useful to any teachers working with young people.
