Second Life Best Practices in Education Conference 5-25-07
26 May 2007The Second Life Best Practices in Education Conference occurred yesterday in Second Life. (See the conference wiki at http://slbestpractices2007.wikispaces.com) By latest reports, it was attended by over 1,200 avatars. From my experiences, it was very valuable and well-organized. In this 24-hour international conference, there were presentations occurring almost every hour in various locations around Second Life. As in real life conferences, there was also a poster session area in which various educational organizations could share information about their work. I installed a booth to represent the CPS Department of Libraries. Our poster area was visited by dozens of avatars throughout the day. Above, my avatar is sitting on the table and I am talking to educators from the UK and Beijing, as well as a Chicago-based colleague from the Golden Apple Foundation.
A highlight of the conference for me was when I attended the presentation “A Guide to SL for K-12 Educators” presented by Kathy Schrock (AV: Kathy Dryburgh). At this packed session, Kathy highlighted the various educational resources and locations within Second Life from her PowerPoint presentation screen.
Later, I returned to the poster area to greet other visitors. A number of people from Chicago Public Schools and Illinois dropped by as well as numerous people from around the world. I hope that this valuable conference will be repeated next year. See Doug Johnson’s great praise for our poster session at his Blue Skunk Blog at http://doug-johnson.squarespace.com/blue-skunk-blog/2007/5/25/kudos-to-dryburgh-and-tulip.html.
