Librarians of Second Life Monthly Staff Meeting

1 April 2007

Today, I attended the monthly staff meeting of the Librarians of Second Life. These meetings provide an opportunity to get a broad overview of the various library-related projects that are occurring throughout the various library and education sims. Today’s meeting was moderated by Kitty Phillip (Kitty Pope) and Lorelei Junot (Lori Bell). The big announcement was that the Alliance Library System, which has been the leader in developing library services in Second Life, will be awarded the American Library Association/Information Today Library of the Future Award. They attributed the award to the joint effort of all who have worked together over the past year to develop the islands. Next, there was a report on the progress on Renaissance Island, which will open soon. Another interesting report was on the establishment of a Reader’s Garden. San Jose State University announced the launch of the Sloodle Learning Management system - an exciting system for using Second Life as a distance learning technology. Attendees at the meeting also discussed ways in which the virtual community can celebrate the one-year anniversary of these islands. And, again the community discussed the best way to develop library services in the future and to utilize Web 3.0 to creat virtual environments that leverage the use of the technology to offer truly unique and effective library services.
