DLIS Celebrates Teen Tech Week
11 March 2007On Wed, March 7th, the CPS Department of Libraries hosted our first major event, following our Open House. This event, a panel discussion, was organized in celebration of YALSA’s new program - Teen Tech Week. (See http://teentechweek.wikispaces.com) Kittygloom Cassady, of ISTE, served as the co-moderator for the discussion, fielding IM questions for panelists and leading the Q&A session.

About 40 avatars attended this event to learn about how four panelists are using technology effectively with teens. For those who missed it, companion audio/ppt presentations are found at http://www.opal-online.org/archiveTTW200703.htm. (Thanks to Tom Peters and the Alliance Library System for assisting us with this.)
Here is the agenda that was distributed via a notecard giver at the program:

About using the technology:
For me, this was a good experience in multi-tasking within Second Life. We used a SpeakEasy HUD to have portions of our speech prepared on notecard and easily released into chat during our presentations. I also had a whiteboard HUD running with presenters’ ppts preloaded as textures. We used a group IM for presenters to communicate behind the scenes about pacing and other issues. And, I monitored chat from the audience and other IMs. It was cool to know that it could all come together to make a successful program. Tips I could share are to plan well in advance, communicate regularly with panelists prior to the event (we met in-world once as group prior to the program and communicated via email during planning phase), practice in advance, arrive early, be flexible, and be sure to keep a little humor going throughout the program. Having an outstanding and dedicated group of panelists really helps, too ![]()
